Key Stage 1
Using the new Abacus Evolve scheme enables children to develop their confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. The children enjoy practical activities followed by workbook based tasks to complete.
The programme of study includes number, place value, the four operations, fractions, measurement and geometry.
The Abacus Evolve maths testing is accrued out at the end of each half term.
Children are set one piece of maths homework each week.
Key Stage 2 Years 3 & 4
The Abacus scheme is used with the support of other books to assist with times tables and mental maths. Each pupil has their own text book.
Practical maths plays a major part in years 3 & 4, with games and fun activities as well as appropriate computer games based on the topic being studied. Units include: – Place Value, Addition & Subtraction, Division and Multiplication, Frequency, Tally & Pictograms, Venn & Carroll diagrams, Bar Charts, Length & Measurement, Time, Shape & Symmetry, Fractions, Doubling & Halving, Odd & Even Numbers and Capacity.
Abacus Evolve maths testing is carried out at the end of each term.
Key Stage 2 Years 5 & 6
The Abacus scheme is used with the support of ‘Target Maths’ and CGP Work Books.
The timetable includes:
5 x 1 hour sessions
2 x 20 minute mental arithmetic sessions
1 times tables test per week
Teacher assistant support is provided for small groups on a daily basis.
Key Stage 3
Mr Dodd takes maths for the whole senior school. He aims to teach pupils to enjoy and progress through mathematics from Key Stage 3 to GCSE.
The Mathematics Department gains results at G.C.S.E. which are consistently higher than the average expected results of students across both Foundation and Higher. Students with a particular strength in the subject go on to Advanced Level at other institutions.
All classes are mixed ability and a range of methods are employed to ensure that individual students make progress. It is important that students can access a topic at a level which promotes interest ,progress and enjoyment; small class sizes allows this to function well.
The ability of pupils and their desire to study Mathematics does vary from pupil to pupil but our aim is to improve the confidence of all students , demonstrate the everyday importance of the subject in our society, and show how fun and clever it can be. We aim for every student to achieve the very best that they are capable of in this subject.
Students use a range of resources including textbooks, ICT, practical demonstration and experiment.
Mathematics is compulsory in all years up to GCSE Level. We use a variety of texts and other resources at Key Stage 3 which allow students to meet and explore the objectives of the National Curriculum.
At Key Stage 4 students follow the J560 Mathematics G.C.S.E. from O.C.R. at either Foundation or Higher Level. This is a new, more demanding, course with additional content and a greater proportion of more challenging questions. Grades are assessed from 1 to 9 (highest) and final assessment is through three end of course examinations.
In Mathematics the aim is to prepare students for these examinations by demonstrating how to use standard techniques, to reason and communicate mathematically and to increase a student’s confidence in solving problems both within the subject and across the wider curriculum.
Every pupil in school has the opportunity to take part in the UK Maths Challenge. This is a national Mathematics competition aimed at the top third of the ability range. We often have successes at Junior and Intermediate level and it can enhance understanding and method in our normal day to study.
Calculators are required in all lessons but used appropriately; there is an emphasis on students being familiar and confident performing both everyday and more complex calculations without it. The Casio FX85 ,or similar, is the preferred model and is available from school for purchase.
Current textbooks, additional resources, and technology are all used to support the learning of students to ensure they can reach their full potential while at Pattison College. The results we attain reflect consistent success in this aim.
Years 7 & 8: 3 x 70 minutes per week.
Year 9: 3 x 70 & 1 x 35 minutes per week.
Year 10: 3 x 70 minutes per week.
Year 11: 3 x 70 minutes per week.
